Frequently asked questions
What is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added to goods and services at each stage of the supply chain where value is added. In the UK, VAT-registered businesses collect VAT from customers on behalf of HMRC and can reclaim VAT paid on business purchases. The end consumer ultimately bears the cost of VAT.
What is the UK VAT rate?
The standard UK VAT rate is 20%, which applies to most goods and services. A reduced rate of 5% applies to certain items such as domestic energy and children's car seats. Some goods and services are zero-rated (0%), including most food and children's clothing, meaning VAT is charged but at 0%.
How do I calculate VAT on a price?
To add VAT to a net (ex-VAT) price, multiply the net price by (1 + VAT rate / 100). For example, £100 net at 20% VAT gives a gross price of £120. To remove VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate / 100). For example, £120 gross at 20% VAT gives a net price of £100.
What is the difference between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive prices?
A VAT-exclusive price (also called net or ex-VAT) does not include VAT — it is the price before VAT is added. A VAT-inclusive price (also called gross) already includes VAT within it. When quoting prices to consumers, UK businesses must display the VAT-inclusive price. B2B pricing is often quoted ex-VAT.
